This temple, as well as that of Queen Nefertari, was originally cut out of a mountainside alongside the Nile River. When the rising water levels of Lake Nasser (which formed when the Aswan High Dam was built) threatened to submerge the structures, they were dug out of the mountain and relocated to higher ground.
